What is Shaktipeeth?
It is said that after the death of Devi Sati, Lord Shiv carried Sati’s body with him and started Tandav. Frightened by this, various deities request Lord Vishnu to intervene. So Lord Vishnu cut the body of Devi Sati in many parts that fell on various parts across the Earth. Today these locations (where those body parts of Devi Sati were fallen) are known as Shaktipeeth. There are 51 Shaktipeeth around the world and 5 are there in Himachal pradesh.

1) Mata Jwalaji Temple
This is the place where Tongue of mata sati fell. It is situated in District kangra of Himachal Pradesh. This shaktipeeth in himachal pradesh is famous for its natural eternal flames. There is an interesting story of this temple from the Mughal era. Once Mughal emperor Akbar visited this temple and being skeptical, he ordered his army to pour water on the flames of Jwalaji, but miraculously the water couldn’t extinguish the flames. Seeing this miracle Akbar offered a golden umbrella for Mata Jwalaji which is still present in the temple of Mata jawala ji.
2) Mata Chintpurni Temple
Here Feet of Mata fell. It is located in District Una of Himachal Pradesh. It is an ancient Temple of Mata Chinnmastika. Every year a huge number of devotees visit this temple and it is believed that Mata grants the wishes of those who have a pure heart. There is a 10 day festival in this temple during Chaitr Navratri. Temple Trust provides Langar free of cost 3 times a day here.
3) Mata Brajeshwari Temple
Here Left Breast of Mata Sati fell, it is located in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. It is said that the original temple was built by Pandavs, during the time of Mahabharat. Just like this temple there are many places in Himachal Pradesh are connected to Mahabharat Period, you can read about them here. This temple is surrounded by a stone wall like a fort. There is also an idol of Dhyanu Bhagat in this temple who offered his head Mata during the time of Mughal emperor akbar. After the earthquake of 1905 this temple was damaged and rebuilt by the government.
4) Shree Chamunda ji mata temple
At this shaktipeeth in himachal pradesh, Ears of mata sati fell. This temple is also in Kangra District of Himachal pradesh. It is also known as Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham. This temple is dedicated to Chamunda Devi which is a form of Goddess Durga. According to legend, in ancient times goddesses killed two demons named Chand and Mund, hence the name Chamunda came. This place itself is a tourist attraction and is surrounded by many other nearby tourist attractions like Tapovan, cricket stadium Dharamshala, Bhagsunag and many more.
5) Mata Naina Devi temple
Eyes of mata Sati fell in thi solace, hence name came Naina devi ji. This temple is located in Bilaspur District of Himachal pradesh. A huge number of devotees come to this temple especially from Punjab and Himachal throughout the year. A fair is organized here during chaitr Navratri, Aswin navratri and Shravab Ashtami. This temple is surrounded by the famous Gobind Sagar lake, Bhakra dam and Anandpur Sahib.
